Subject: Unifund Scum
Dear Mr. Hibbs,
I wrote to you a while back about getting sued by Unifund. I wanted to let you know what happened, but most importantly, I want you to know that you inspired me to not take their crap.
Today, I went to my pre-trial conference/mediation with the scum of the Earth (i.e., Unifund). Needless to say, their representative was in rare form. He called me out into the rotunda of the courthouse and asked me if I wanted to talk to him about the matter. I told him no, not without an attorney present. He quickly informed me that I "don't get an attorney for civil court." Liar! He was rude and arrogant with me as expected. I have to tell you that at first I thought he was a mediator for the courts because he ran in and out of the staging area like he owned it. He also had a little minion with him who I mistook for a court representative. They seemed to be in cahoots with the courthouse staff. They were making copies on the copy machines at the civil court office, and they were chatting up the secretaries about their kids, etc. The mediator and other workers there know this attorney and his little sidekick on a first name basis. She pretty much let him control the mediation. Although I told them repeatedly that I denied the claim and that I had nothing more to say, it only took him once to end the "mediation" process. At one point he called me hostile, said that if I didn't want to settle then they would go to trial and the attorney would "slam" me in court and get a judgment against me. I objected to that right away, I said he was threatening me. The mediator didn't care, though. He proceeded to call me Perry Mason, and ended the mediation. We're going to trial. I say let's go.
Mr. Hibbs, the most disturbing part of the day wasn't my situation. It was that of another also coming under the fire of this low-life. This attorney worked the waiting area. He had a stack of files like mine in his arms- probably more than ten. After he spoke to me in the hall, he called a woman over to him to try the same thing with her. This woman was with her young son, a paraplegic boy with cerebral palsy. The sight of this poor child didn't bother him or sway him. He preyed on his mother's weakness and fear. He brow beat her, urging her to make payments or else, as if making payments to some evil collection agency was to take priority over her sick baby. This made my blood boil and run cold all at once. He had no honor, no respect for anyone or anything but the mighty dollar.
So I am coming to you from a new place. I did retain a lawyer and he is going to attack their paperwork just like you said. If I win, great. If I lose, that's fine. I'm taking one for the team. I refuse to seek mercy from a soulless man like him who represents bottom feeders like Unifund. Win, lose, or draw, my fight is dedicated to that struggling mother, to the young students who committed suicide over credit cards (Mitzi Pool et al., and to you, Mr. Hibbs.
If ever there is something that I could help you with- please let me know. Petitions, volunteering, getting the word out, anything.
In short...thank you, Mr. Hibbs. Your words gave me strength.
Most sincerely,
Niki B.
